Medicinal Mushroom CordycepsSinensis (and Reishi) Naturally Boosts Immune Functioning

People who try Cordyceps sinensis (and reishi) report that the tiny mushrooms soothe their nerves, lower their fatigue, and even make them stop coughing. Both reishi and Cordyceps sinensis have been use for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine, but western practitioners have started to catch on. This article explains the medicinal benefits of taking Cordyceps Sinensis and Reishi for a broad range of problems, including reducing stress and fatigue, and even treating infertility. What follows are only some of the benefits of the medicinal mushroom that was once worth its weight in gold!

Boosting the Immune System

Because it boosts respiratory health, Cordyceps sinensis is thought to boost immune functioning. Studies performed on melanoma-bearing mice suggest that this piece of ancient wisdom is true! Cordyceps sinensis boosted the immune system, and prevented the growth of tumors in these mice (Zhang et al., 2005). Reishi may also improve respiratory health by preventing the development of tumors and blockages (Choong et al., 2007). Scientists aren’t yet sure how Cordyceps sinensis and reishi improve immune functioning, but they think that it might have something to do with polysaccharides, which they believe activate the immune system… kind of kicking it into gear if it’s flagging (Hsu et al., 2009). Another way that Cordyceps sinensis helps your immune system is by boosting liver function. Two studies found that this medicinal mushroom decreased damage from liver cirrhosis in rats (Zhang et al., 2004; Liu &Shen, 2003).

Treating Infertility

Chinese medicine practitioners also used Cordyceps sinensis to treat infertility. While no one has performed a study on this use in humans, we can look at studies on mice to see how it might work. One study found a significant increase in testosterone in male mice, and its authors suggest that Cordyceps sinensis may have medicinal uses in treating infertility caused by low testosterone in human men (Hsu et al., 2003). Doctors who treat infertility use Cordyceps sinensis to encourage successful implantation in vitro fertilization, which may be because it stimulates the production of oestrogen (Qi, Yan, Wang, & Lei, 2011). The fungus may also help restore sexual function if it has waned (Zhu, Halpern, & Jones, 2008).
